Why your Etsy stats look so vague
You post to four platforms and Etsy tells you visits came from “social media”. Tagged links are how you turn that into something you can act on.
Untagged traffic gets lumped together
Without tags, Etsy has no reliable way to separate a Pinterest pin from an Instagram story from a friend sharing your link. It all lands in the same bucket.
Tag before you push, not after
Tags only record visits that arrive through the tagged link. Adding them halfway through a launch means the first half of your data is gone for good.
One link per placement, not per platform
If you share the same listing in a story and in a post, tag them differently. Otherwise you know Instagram worked, but not which part of it.
Consistency is the whole point
Two spellings of the same source split your numbers across two rows. Six months of consistent naming is worth more than a perfect taxonomy you abandon.
Start with one question worth answering — Pinterest or Instagram. Tag both for a month, look at the numbers, and put your time where the visits actually come from.
Frequently asked questions
What is a UTM link and why would an Etsy seller use one?
A UTM link is a normal link with a few extra tags on the end that record where the visit came from. Without them, Etsy groups most external visits together and you cannot tell whether your Pinterest pins or your Instagram stories are doing the work. With them, each source shows up separately in your stats.
Where do I see UTM data on Etsy?
In Shop Manager under Stats, in the traffic sources breakdown. Tagged visits appear grouped by the source you set. It takes a day or two for data to build up, so tag your links before a launch rather than during it.
Do UTM tags hurt my Etsy SEO?
No. They only affect how a visit is recorded, not how the listing ranks. Etsy search does not see or care about parameters on an inbound link.
Should I use a link shortener with UTM tags?
For anything customer-facing, yes. Tagged links get long and a long messy URL in a bio or on packaging looks untrustworthy. A shortener keeps the tags working while showing something clean.
What should I name my sources?
Short, lowercase and consistent. 'instagram' and 'Instagram' are counted as two separate sources, which quietly splits your data in half. Pick a convention on day one and stick to it — this tool lowercases everything automatically for that reason.

Knowing where visitors come from only pays off if the listing sells. Graphloom builds the photos and copy that do the converting.
