Optional. Etsy crops your first photo to 5:4 landscape in search results, so a square photo loses the top and bottom.

What to look for

If the visible part of your title stops before your product is named, buyers scrolling search never learn what you sell. Move the product into the first few words and push gift wording to the end.

Write for two readers at once

An Etsy title has two jobs that pull in opposite directions, and most sellers only solve one of them.

Etsy's algorithm reads all 140 characters

Every phrase in the title is a search term you can surface for, whether or not a buyer ever sees it. Leaving the field half empty removes you from searches for no benefit.

A buyer reads about 40

Listing cards clamp to two lines. If those two lines say 'Personalised Gift for Her Unique Present Birthday...' the buyer has learned nothing about what you actually sell.

Order solves both

Lead with the product and its defining feature. Push occasions, recipients and long keyword tails to the end, where they still count for search but cost you nothing in the visible portion.

Mobile is the version that matters

Around two thirds of Etsy traffic is mobile, and mobile cards are narrower. If your title works on the mobile preview, it works everywhere.

The test that settles most titles: cover everything after the first two lines. If what remains does not tell a stranger what the product is, reorder it.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Etsy cut off my listing title?

Etsy clamps the title to two lines inside the listing card, so the cut-off point depends on how wide your characters are rather than a fixed character count. Wide words like 'Personalised' eat the space faster than short ones. This preview renders your title at real card widths, so what you see is what buyers see.

Why does my title look shorter on mobile?

Mobile listing cards are narrower — roughly 168 pixels compared to 232 on desktop — while still clamping to two lines. Since around two thirds of Etsy traffic is mobile, the mobile view is the one worth optimising for.

Should I write a short Etsy title then?

No. Use the full 140 characters, because every phrase in the title is a search you can appear in, whether or not a buyer sees it. What matters is the order: put the product and its key description first, and push gift wording, occasions and long keyword tails to the end where truncation does no harm.

How does Etsy crop my listing photo in search?

Search thumbnails display at a 5:4 landscape ratio, cropped from the centre of your first photo. A square 2000 x 2000 photo therefore loses the top and bottom in search. Keep your product centred and away from the vertical edges of the frame.

Does the Google preview matter for Etsy sellers?

Yes, more than most sellers expect. Etsy listings are indexed by Google, and a meaningful share of shop traffic arrives from there rather than from Etsy search. Google truncates around 60 characters on one line, which is even less forgiving than Etsy's two-line clamp.
