What Etsy search actually rewards
Most listing advice is vague. These are the parts you control directly, ranked by how much difference they make.
All 13 tags, every time
Each tag is a search you can appear in. Leaving slots empty removes you from those searches entirely. It is the biggest gap on most listings and takes minutes to fix.
Long-tail phrases beat single words
'Mug' puts you against half a million listings. 'Speckled ceramic coffee mug' puts you against a few hundred, in front of buyers who know exactly what they want.
The first 45 characters of your title
Etsy weights the opening of a title, and mobile truncates the rest. Leading with 'Gift for Her' before your actual product spends that space on nothing.
Tags that cover what the title cannot
Copying title words into tags wastes both. Use tags for the searches your title has no room for — occasions, materials, styles, recipients.
A description that opens with the keyword
Google indexes Etsy listings, and the first line becomes the snippet. It is also what a buyer reads before deciding whether to keep scrolling.
Grade your three best-selling listings first. Fixing the ones that already get traffic returns more than optimising the ones nobody has found yet.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Etsy listing grader work?
It checks your listing against the rules Etsy actually enforces and the patterns that consistently rank: title length and keyword placement, whether all 13 tag slots are used, tag character limits, how many tags are long-tail phrases, and whether your description opens with the keyword. Each check is weighted, and the score reflects how much each one matters.
Why does tag count matter so much?
Etsy gives you 13 tags and each one is a separate search term you can appear for. Using 8 means five searches you have simply opted out of, for no reason. It is the single easiest fix on most listings and it costs nothing but a few minutes.
Should my tags be single words or phrases?
Phrases, almost always. A tag like 'mug' competes with hundreds of thousands of listings and you will never surface. 'Handmade ceramic mug' has far fewer competitors and attracts buyers who already know what they want, which converts better as well as ranking easier.
Does the start of my Etsy title really matter?
Yes. Etsy weights the opening of a title more heavily than the end, and buyers on mobile see the first few words before it truncates. Burying your main keyword after 'Handmade Gift for Her Unique Present' wastes the most valuable space you have.
Is my listing data saved anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored, and there is no account to create.
