Where to watermark and where not to
The right answer is different for each place your photos appear, and treating them all the same costs you either sales or protection.
Listing photos: light or none
Etsy discourages text on listing images, and buyers want to see the product without something over it. If you watermark here at all, keep it small, low opacity and in a corner.
Pinterest and Instagram: tile it
These are where photos get lifted most, because the image travels without your name attached. A repeated pattern at low opacity survives cropping and screenshots.
The first photo matters most
Your first listing image is what appears in search, on Pinterest and in Google Images. If any photo is worth protecting, it is that one — and it is also the one where a heavy watermark hurts most.
A watermark is a deterrent, not a lock
Anyone determined can clone it out. What it does is make casual copying more effort than finding a different photo, which is enough to stop most of it.
Keep two versions of every product photo — one clean for your Etsy listing, one watermarked for everywhere else. It takes seconds here and covers both cases.
Frequently asked questions
Should I watermark my Etsy listing photos?
It is a trade-off. A watermark deters casual copying, but it also sits between the buyer and the product, and Etsy's own guidance discourages text overlays on listing images. Most sellers watermark the photos they post publicly on Pinterest and Instagram, and leave listing photos clean.
What opacity should a watermark be?
Around 40% for something visible but not distracting. Below 25% it becomes easy to clone out; above 60% it starts competing with your product for attention. If you need genuine protection rather than a signature, tiling at low opacity works better than one bold mark.
Can someone remove a watermark?
A single mark in a corner can be cropped off in seconds. A tiled pattern across the whole image is far harder to remove without visibly damaging the photo. Nothing is completely theft-proof, but tiling raises the effort enough that most people move on.
Should I use text or a logo?
Text is simpler and always legible at small sizes. A logo builds recognition if you already have one, but it needs to be a PNG with a transparent background — a JPG logo arrives with a white box around it that looks unfinished.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The watermark is drawn onto your image in your browser using canvas. Nothing is sent to a server and nothing is stored.
