What Etsy does to your photo after you upload it

The image you upload is not the image buyers see. Etsy resizes and crops it for several places at once, and you do not get to choose how.

Search results get a landscape crop

Your first photo is cropped from the centre to fit the listing card. A tall square image loses its top and bottom exactly where you might have put the product.

Under 2000 pixels means no zoom

Etsy only enables zoom above that threshold. For handmade goods, zoom is where the buying decision happens — it is how someone checks a glaze, a weave or a solder joint.

Icons and profile photos become circles

Square uploads, circular display. The corners are always cut, so a logo that fills its square frame loses its edges entirely.

Banners crop from the sides

Shop banners are cut narrower on smaller screens. Text or a logo near the left or right edge disappears for a large share of your visitors.

The rule that avoids all of it: keep your subject in the middle, with room around every edge. Whatever Etsy crops, your product survives.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Etsy photo blurry?

Nearly always because it was uploaded below 2000 pixels on the shortest side. Etsy stretches smaller images to fill the listing, which softens every edge. It can also happen if the file was already compressed heavily before uploading — each save at low quality throws away detail permanently.

What size do Etsy listing photos need to be?

At least 2000 pixels on the shortest side. Below that Etsy will not enable zoom, and a handmade listing that cannot be zoomed into loses buyers who want to inspect texture, glaze or stitching before committing.

How does Etsy crop my listing photos?

Search result thumbnails are cropped to a landscape ratio from the centre of your first photo. A square image loses the top and bottom in search even though the full version appears on the listing page. Keep your product centred and away from the vertical edges.

What image formats does Etsy accept?

JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP. JPG is the practical default for photos. PNG and WebP keep transparency, which matters for logos and shop icons rather than product shots.

Does Etsy have a file size limit?

20 MB per image, which is generous enough that almost nothing hits it. The number that actually affects your shop is loading speed — heavy photos make listings slow on mobile data, and buyers leave before the images appear.

Right specs. Right photo.
