Five is usually enough for a shop palette — one dominant, two supporting, two accents.

Branding starts with what you already make
Most shop branding advice starts with mood boards and colour theory. For a handmade shop the answer is usually already sitting in your camera roll.
Your products set the palette
A banner in colours your products do not contain looks borrowed. Buyers scroll from your banner straight to your listings, and the mismatch registers even when they cannot name it.
Backgrounds dominate, products define
The largest colour in any product photo is usually the backdrop. The one worth building on is further down the list — the glaze, the fabric, the timber.
Consistency does the work
The same five colours across your banner, shop icon, packaging inserts and social posts makes a small shop look established. It costs nothing beyond deciding once.
Check contrast before you set text
A soft blush that looks beautiful as a background makes white text unreadable. That is why each colour here is labelled — it saves discovering it after the banner is live.
Run your three best-selling photos through this and look for the colours that show up in all of them. Those are your shop colours, whether you chose them or not.
Frequently asked questions
How do I pick brand colours for my Etsy shop?
Start from your products rather than from a colour theory chart. Run your best-selling photo through this tool and you have a palette that already matches what you make. A banner in colours your products do not contain looks disconnected the moment a buyer scrolls down.
Why is the biggest colour usually not my brand colour?
Because backgrounds take up the most space in a photo. A white or linen backdrop will dominate every palette. Look further down the list for the colour that belongs to the product — that is the one worth building a shop around.
How many colours should a shop palette have?
Five is a workable number: one dominant, two supporting, two accents. More than that and you stop making choices — you just have a list. Fewer than three and your banner, icon and packaging start looking flat.
What does the contrast label mean?
It shows whether white text placed on that colour would be readable. Pale colours fail, which matters if you plan to put your shop name over a coloured banner. Colours marked as too light still work as backgrounds, just not behind white text.
How does the tool find the colours?
It reads the pixels in your image and groups them using median cut, a standard colour quantisation method. Everything runs in your browser — the image is never uploaded and nothing is stored.
