Where SKUs go

Add them under each variation in your Etsy listing. Buyers never see them — they are for your own stock records, packing slips and order sheets.

What makes a SKU worth having

A SKU system is only useful if you can read it without a key. These are the rules that hold up as a shop grows.

General to specific, always in the same order

Product, then size, then colour. Once that order is fixed, you can read any code in your shop at a glance — and so can anyone helping you pack.

Never encode anything that changes

Prices rise, seasons pass, suppliers change. A SKU that contains any of those becomes wrong the moment it does, and you are left relabelling stock.

Keep the codes short but distinct

Two characters is usually too few — Cream and Charcoal both become CR. Three is the sweet spot for most shops, or use initials for two-word values.

Decide the format once and stay with it

The value of a SKU system is consistency, not cleverness. A format you follow for two years beats a better one you abandon after a month.

The test for any SKU system: if someone else picked up an order sheet and walked to your shelves, could they find the right item without asking you?

Frequently asked questions

What is a SKU and do Etsy sellers need one?

A SKU is a short code you assign to a specific version of a product — a large cream mug rather than just a mug. Etsy does not require them, but the moment you have more than a handful of variations, SKUs are what let you find the right item on a shelf or in a spreadsheet without guessing.

What makes a good SKU format?

Readable, consistent, and structured from general to specific. MUG-LRG-CRM tells you the product, size and colour at a glance. Random numbers work for a computer but not for the person picking stock at eleven at night.

Should SKUs include the price or the year?

No. A SKU should identify the item, not describe things that change. Prices move and stock carries over between years. Putting either in the code means reprinting labels every time something shifts.

How many variations can an Etsy listing have?

Etsy allows up to 100 variation combinations per listing, across two variation types. If your size and colour options multiply past that, you need to split the product into separate listings.

Do buyers see my SKUs?

No. SKUs are internal. They appear in your order data and any exports you run, which is exactly where they are useful — matching an order to the right item without reading through a description.
