Etsy Tags: How to Use All Thirteen Properly

Phrases rather than single words, and never repeating your title. What to fill thirteen slots with, and where to find phrases worth using.

6 min read

Etsy gives you thirteen tags and takes them more seriously than almost anything else you control. Most sellers fill eight, use single words, and repeat what the title already says. Fixing all three takes about ten minutes per listing.

What a tag actually is

A tag is a search term you are telling Etsy your listing should appear for. Thirteen tags means thirteen searches you can surface in.

Two rules govern them.

Twenty characters each. That limit exists because Etsy expects phrases rather than single words. Handmade ceramic mug is exactly twenty characters, which is not a coincidence.

Thirteen slots, all of them yours. There is no penalty for using every one, and no benefit whatsoever to leaving any empty.

An unused tag slot is a search you have opted out of, permanently, for nothing in return. This is the most common gap on Etsy listings and the fastest one to close.

Why single word tags fail

Mug competes with hundreds of thousands of listings. You will not appear on page one, page five, or anywhere a buyer will look.

Speckled ceramic mug competes with a few hundred. You can realistically rank, and the person searching that phrase already knows what they want, so they convert better when they arrive.

This is the trade nobody explains properly. Broad tags feel ambitious and deliver nothing. Specific tags feel limiting and actually work.

You have thirteen slots. Spend them on searches you can win.

Do not repeat your title

Your title already covers the searches it contains. Copying those words into tags wastes both.

Tags are for the searches your title has no room for. Occasions, recipients, materials, styles, rooms, colour families, use cases.

Title: Speckled Ceramic Coffee Mug, Handmade Stoneware Cup

Weak tags: ceramic mug, coffee mug, stoneware mug, handmade mug

Better tags: housewarming gift, coffee lover gift, minimalist kitchen, rustic tableware, cosy morning ritual, small batch pottery, gift for her, new home present

The second set reaches buyers the title cannot, and that is the entire job.

Where to find tags worth using

Four sources, in order of how well they work.

Etsy's own search bar. Type the start of a phrase and read the autocomplete suggestions. Those are real searches people are making, provided directly by the platform.

Related searches at the bottom of results. Etsy lists them under any search results page. Free, and specific to your category.

Your competitors' listings. Look at shops ranking above you for terms you want. Their tags are not visible, but their titles are, and the phrasing tells you what is working.

Your own stats. Shop Manager shows some of the search terms that brought people to your listings. Anything appearing there that you did not target is a phrase worth adding deliberately.

What to fill thirteen slots with

A structure that produces variety rather than thirteen versions of the same phrase.

  • Three or four product descriptors. What it is, in the different ways people say it
  • Two or three material or style tags. Stoneware, rustic, minimalist, hand thrown
  • Two or three occasion tags. Housewarming, birthday, wedding, Christmas
  • Two recipient tags. Gift for her, gift for coffee lovers, teacher gift
  • One or two context tags. Kitchen decor, desk accessory, cosy home

Thirteen tags, five angles, minimal overlap. That is a listing reaching several different searches rather than one search thirteen times.

Mistakes that waste slots

Plurals of a tag you already have. Etsy handles singular and plural reasonably well, so mug and mugs is close to a wasted slot.

Misspellings as a strategy. People do misspell things, but Etsy corrects most of them before the search runs. You are usually buying nothing.

Other languages. Etsy translates listings automatically. Foreign language tags mostly consume slots you could use for real searches.

Anything over twenty characters. Etsy will reject it, and it is worth checking rather than discovering when you try to save.

Duplicates. Two tags saying the same thing is one wasted slot. Obvious, and it happens constantly.

What tags cannot do

Being clear about the ceiling, because tags get treated as a complete SEO strategy and they are not.

They will not rescue a listing that does not convert. Etsy ranks partly on how often people buy after seeing a listing. Perfect tags on a listing with a weak photo produces views, no clicks, and a slow slide back down.

They will not make you rank for anything you want. Tagging a mug as wedding gift will surface you occasionally, but if buyers searching that do not want a mug, Etsy learns quickly.

They stop mattering above a point. Thirteen relevant tags is the ceiling. There is no fourteenth thing to optimise.

Ten minutes per listing

The whole job, for one listing.

  1. Read your title and note which words it already covers.
  2. Type your product into Etsy search and note the autocomplete suggestions.
  3. Write thirteen phrases across the five categories above, avoiding title repeats.
  4. Check none exceed twenty characters.
  5. Check none duplicate each other.
  6. Save, and leave it for three or four weeks before judging.

Start with the three listings that already get the most views. Improving what traffic already reaches beats optimising what nobody has found.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags can you use on Etsy?

Thirteen, at twenty characters each. Every slot is a separate search you can appear in, so leaving any empty removes you from those searches for no benefit. Using all thirteen is the single most common gap on Etsy listings and takes about ten minutes to fix.

Should Etsy tags be single words or phrases?

Phrases, almost always. A tag like mug competes with hundreds of thousands of listings and will never surface. Speckled ceramic mug competes with a few hundred and reaches buyers who already know what they want, so it ranks easier and converts better at the same time.

Should Etsy tags repeat words from the title?

No. Your title already covers the searches it contains, so copying those words into tags wastes both. Use tags for what the title has no room for: occasions, recipients, materials, styles, rooms and use cases.

Where do I find good Etsy tags?

Etsy's own search bar autocomplete shows real searches people are making. The related searches at the bottom of any results page are free and category specific. Your Shop Manager stats also show some of the terms that already brought people to your listings.

Do misspelled tags work on Etsy?

Rarely. People do misspell things, but Etsy corrects most misspellings before the search runs, so you are usually buying nothing with the slot. The same applies to foreign language tags, since Etsy translates listings automatically.
