Etsy SEO: How Titles and Tags Actually Rank
Etsy publishes its ranking factors. What each one measures, why keyword stuffing eventually fails, and the order worth fixing your listings in.

Etsy publishes its ranking factors. Most SEO advice ignores them and tells you to stuff keywords instead. This is what Etsy actually says it measures, what each factor means in practice, and the order worth fixing them in.
There are seven factors. Two of them you control completely, three you influence over time, and two you cannot touch at all. Knowing which is which saves a lot of wasted effort.
How Etsy search actually decides
When someone types a query, Etsy does two things. First it gathers every listing that could possibly match. Then it ranks them.
Matching is about relevancy: does your listing contain the words they searched for. Ranking is about everything else: does your listing look like one that will sell.
| Factor | What it measures | Can you control it |
|---|---|---|
| Relevancy | Query words in your title, tags, categories, attributes | Completely |
| Listing quality score | How often people buy after seeing it | Over time |
| Recency | How recently it was listed or renewed | Briefly |
| Shipping price | Free shipping on US orders over $35 | Yes |
| Customer experience score | Reviews, policies, complete About section | Over time |
| Translations | Whether your listing reaches other languages | Partly |
| Shopper habits | What this specific buyer usually looks at | Not at all |
The first two carry most of the weight. Almost everything worth doing sits in those two rows.
Your title has two jobs and they conflict
An Etsy title is 140 characters. Etsy reads all of them. A buyer reads about forty.
That gap is the whole problem, and most titles solve only one side of it.
What Etsy needs from your title
Every phrase in the title is a search you can appear in. Leaving the field half empty removes you from searches for no benefit at all. Etsy also weights the opening of a title more heavily than the end, so word order carries real meaning.
What a buyer needs from your title
In search results your title clamps to two lines. If those two lines say "Personalised Gift For Her Unique Present Birthday Anniversary" the buyer has learned nothing about what you sell, and scrolls on.
How to satisfy both
Lead with the product and its defining feature. Push occasions, recipients and long keyword tails to the end, where they still count for search but cost you nothing in the visible part.
Weak: Gift For Her, Unique Birthday Present, Handmade Gift Idea, Ceramic Mug
Better: Speckled Ceramic Coffee Mug, Handmade Stoneware Cup, Rustic Pottery Mug, Gift For Coffee Lovers, Housewarming Present
Same length. Same keywords. Completely different first impression.

Etsy gives you thirteen tags at twenty characters each. Three things go wrong with them, and all three are quick to fix.
Leaving slots empty
Each tag is a separate search term. Using eight means five searches you have opted out of. This is the single most common gap on Etsy listings and the one that takes the least effort to close.
Using single words
"Mug" puts you against hundreds of thousands of listings. "Speckled ceramic mug" puts you against a few hundred, in front of buyers who already know what they want. Long tail phrases rank easier and convert better at the same time, which is a rare combination.
Twenty characters is enough for most phrases. That limit exists because Etsy expects phrases, not single words.
Repeating what the title already says
Copying title words into tags wastes both. Your title already covers those searches. Use tags for what the title has no room for: occasions, materials, styles, recipients, room types, colour families.
A quick test. Read your thirteen tags without looking at the title. If you can guess most of the title from them, they are doing half the work they could.
What relevancy actually measures
Relevancy is not just word matching. Etsy weights where the words appear and how closely they match.
Exact phrase matches score highest. A search for "ceramic coffee mug" matches a tag reading exactly that far better than three separate tags for "ceramic", "coffee" and "mug".
Categories and attributes count as keywords. Filling in every attribute Etsy offers for your category, including the ones that feel optional, adds matchable terms without using title or tag space.
Titles carry more weight than tags. Both matter, but your strongest keyword belongs in the title and in a tag, not in a tag alone.

Etsy tracks how often people buy a listing after seeing it. Listings that convert get shown more. Listings that get views and no sales quietly slide down.
This is why keyword stuffing eventually fails. You can rank for a search you barely match, buyers arrive and leave, and Etsy learns that your listing does not satisfy that search. The ranking you gained by stuffing gets taken back with interest.
It also means conversion work is SEO work. Better photos, a description that answers real questions, all thirteen tags relevant rather than clever: these raise conversion, and conversion raises ranking.
The listing that ranks is the listing that sells. Etsy is measuring the outcome, not the effort, which is why no amount of keyword tinkering fixes a listing buyers do not want.
Recency, and why relisting is a trap
New listings get a temporary visibility boost while Etsy works out how they perform. The boost is short and it does not repeat meaningfully.
Relisting an old item costs $0.20 and buys you a brief bump, then the listing settles back exactly where its performance says it should. Sellers who relist constantly spend real money to avoid the actual problem.
Things that do not help
A few pieces of advice circulate widely and do nothing.
Keyword stuffing the description. Etsy has said description text carries little weight in search. Write the description for the buyer, because conversion is the factor that matters, and conversion is decided by whether their questions get answered.
Adding tags in other languages. Etsy translates listings automatically. Foreign language tags mostly waste slots you could use for real searches.
Changing everything at once. If you rewrite the title, swap all thirteen tags and replace the photos in one sitting, you learn nothing about which change worked. Change one thing, wait three or four weeks, look at the numbers.
Chasing the algorithm. Etsy adjusts search regularly. Listings built on complete tags, honest keywords and photos that convert survive those adjustments. Listings built on tricks do not.
A practical order to fix things in
Take your three highest view listings first, not your favourites. Then:
- Fill all thirteen tags with multi word phrases that the title does not already cover.
- Rewrite the title so the first forty characters name the product and its defining feature.
- Complete every attribute Etsy offers for your category.
- Check the first photo at thumbnail size. If you cannot tell what it is when small, it is losing clicks before ranking matters.
- Answer the obvious questions in the description: size, materials, delivery time, care, personalisation.
- Wait three weeks before touching anything else.
Then look at views, visits and orders. Views moving means the tags worked. Visits moving means the photo did. Orders moving means the listing page did.
Where SEO stops helping
There is a ceiling to this. A listing with perfect tags and a weak first photo will rank, collect views, convert badly, and slide back down. Etsy is measuring what buyers do, and buyers decide on the photo.
That is the gap Graphloom closes. You photograph the product once on your phone and it produces professional listing images, along with the listing itself: an SEO title within the character limit, all thirteen tags as phrases, and a full description.
It will not outrank a better product. It stops a good product from losing to a better photographed one.
Frequently asked questions
How does Etsy search ranking work?
Etsy first matches listings that contain the search words, then ranks them. Matching depends on your title, tags, categories and attributes. Ranking depends mostly on how often people buy your listing after seeing it, plus factors like shipping price, reviews and how recently you listed.
How many tags should an Etsy listing have?
All thirteen, every time. Each tag is a separate search you can appear in, so an unused slot is a search you have opted out of for no benefit. Use multi word phrases rather than single words, because phrases have far less competition and attract buyers who already know what they want.
Does keyword stuffing work on Etsy?
Only briefly. You can rank for searches you barely match, but buyers arrive, leave without buying, and Etsy learns the listing does not satisfy that search. Conversion is a ranking factor, so the position gained by stuffing gets taken back.
Does relisting improve Etsy SEO?
Barely. New and renewed listings get a short visibility boost while Etsy assesses them, then settle back to where their performance places them. Relisting repeatedly costs $0.20 each time and avoids whatever the real problem is.
Do Etsy descriptions matter for SEO?
Very little directly. Etsy has indicated description text carries limited weight in search. It matters enormously indirectly, because a description that answers buyer questions raises conversion, and conversion is one of the strongest ranking factors.
