Etsy Attributes: The Free SEO Most Sellers Skip

Matchable keywords that cost nothing from your title or your thirteen tags, and they drive the filters buyers use in search. What to fill and why.

Etsy attributes are the fields under your category that most sellers skip because they look optional. They are matchable search terms that cost you nothing from your title or your thirteen tags, which makes them the cheapest ranking work available.

What attributes are

When you choose a category, Etsy shows a set of structured fields specific to it. Colour, material, occasion, style, room, holiday, recipient. The exact list depends on what you sell.

They are not free text. You pick from options Etsy provides, which is exactly why they work differently from tags.

Buyers filter on them. The sidebar filters in Etsy search are built from attributes. If you have not set colour, you do not appear when someone filters by colour, regardless of how good your listing is.

Etsy reads them as keywords. Attributes feed into relevancy matching alongside your title and tags.

They cost nothing. No character limit shared with anything else. Filling them uses none of your 140 title characters and none of your thirteen tag slots.

This is the only part of Etsy SEO that is genuinely free. Everything else is a trade between competing uses of limited space. Attributes are additional matchable terms at no cost, and most shops leave half of them empty.

Why the category matters most

Attributes come from your category, so the wrong category gives you the wrong fields.

Go as deep as Etsy allows. Not Home and Living, but Home and Living, then Kitchen and Dining, then Drink and Barware, then Mugs. Each level down unlocks more specific attributes and more specific filters.

Deeper categories have less competition. A listing sitting in a broad category competes with everything in it. A listing four levels down competes with items that are genuinely similar.

Check yours is still right. Etsy adjusts its category tree, and a listing created two years ago may sit somewhere that no longer exists in the same shape.

Fill every field

Even the ones that feel approximate.

Colour. Etsy offers a limited palette, so pick the closest. A speckled cream mug is not exactly white and white is the filter buyers will use. An approximate answer appears in the filter; an empty field does not.

Material. The primary one, and secondary if offered. Stoneware, linen, sterling silver.

Occasion and holiday. These drive enormous seasonal traffic and they are the fields most often left blank. Christmas, wedding, birthday, housewarming.

Style. Rustic, minimalist, boho, vintage. Buyers browse by these more than sellers expect.

Recipient and room. Where offered. For her, for him, kitchen, nursery, bathroom.

Size and dimensions. Where the category asks. This feeds size filters, which matter for anything wearable or furnishing.

Production partner and who made it

Three fields Etsy requires, and getting them wrong is a policy problem rather than an SEO one.

Who made it. I did, a member of my shop, or another company. Print on demand sellers must select another company and name the production partner, and this is not optional.

What is it. A finished product, or a supply or tool to make things.

When was it made. Made to order, ready to ship, or a vintage date range. Vintage requires the item to be at least twenty years old.

Misdeclaring any of these is a Creativity Standards issue. Print on demand sellers who select I did are the most common case, and it is a genuine risk to the shop rather than a technicality.

If AI generative tools were involved in creating what you sell, Etsy expects the attribution to reflect that. Designed by rather than made by, plus the AI disclosure. This sits alongside the production partner declaration rather than replacing it.

Where attributes beat tags

Worth understanding, because the two get confused.

AttributesTags
FormatFixed options Etsy providesFree text, your words
FiltersDrive the sidebar filtersDo not
LimitNo shared budgetThirteen slots
Best forStructured factsLong tail phrases

Attributes handle the structured version of your product. Tags handle the phrases buyers actually type.

That means do not waste tags on things attributes already cover. If colour is set to blue in the attribute, a tag reading blue is a slot spent on something already handled. Use that slot for a phrase, which is what tags are good at.

The seasonal fields sellers forget

Occasion and holiday attributes drive traffic that appears and disappears on a schedule.

Set them before the season, not during. A listing tagged for Christmas in November has told Etsy nothing about how it performs against Christmas searches. Set in September, it has three months of signal.

Do not set holidays that do not apply. A mug tagged for every holiday Etsy offers gets shown against searches it does not satisfy, buyers leave, and Etsy learns the listing does not match. Relevance is the point.

Review them annually. Products change and so do the fields Etsy offers.

A ten minute pass

For one listing.

  1. Check the category is as deep as it goes. Most listings sit one or two levels shallower than they could.
  2. Fill every attribute field shown, choosing the closest option where nothing is exact.
  3. Verify who made it, what is it and when was it made are accurate rather than convenient.
  4. Set occasion and holiday if they genuinely apply.
  5. Remove any tags that duplicate what an attribute now covers, and replace them with phrases.

Start with your five most viewed listings. Attributes are the cheapest work on this list and the least done, which is an unusual combination worth taking advantage of.

Frequently asked questions

What are Etsy attributes?

Structured fields under your category covering things like colour, material, occasion and style. You pick from options Etsy provides rather than writing your own text. They feed Etsy's relevancy matching and they drive the sidebar filters buyers use in search.

Do Etsy attributes affect search ranking?

Yes, in two ways. Etsy reads them as matchable keywords alongside your title and tags, and they determine whether you appear when a buyer applies a filter. An unset colour attribute means you are invisible to anyone filtering by colour, regardless of listing quality.

Should Etsy tags repeat my attributes?

No. If colour is set to blue in the attribute, a tag reading blue is a wasted slot on something already covered. Attributes handle the structured facts about your product. Use your thirteen tags for long tail phrases buyers actually type.

What does who made it mean on Etsy?

A required declaration: I did, a member of my shop, or another company. Print on demand sellers must select another company and name their production partner. Misdeclaring this is a Creativity Standards issue rather than a technicality, and it puts the shop at risk.

When should I set occasion and holiday attributes?

Well before the season. A listing set for Christmas in November has no performance history against Christmas searches. Set in September it has three months of signal. Only set holidays that genuinely apply, since irrelevant ones bring traffic that leaves.
