Etsy Image Sizes: Every Dimension You Need

Listing photos, shop banners, icons and profile photos, plus why two different banner dimensions circulate and what gets cropped where.

7 min read

Etsy image sizes are simple until you look them up and find two different numbers for the same banner. Here is every dimension you need, why the conflicting banner sizes both exist, and what gets cropped where.

The short version, if you only need the numbers:

Where it goesSizeNotes
Listing photo2000 x 2000 px2000 px minimum on the shortest side
Listing photo, landscape2700 x 2025 px4:3, fills more of the card
Big shop banner1600 x 400 px3360 x 840 for sharper screens
Mini shop banner1600 x 213 pxDoes not display on mobile
Shop icon500 x 500 pxCropped to a circle
Profile photo400 x 400 pxCropped to a circle

Now the parts that matter more than the numbers.

Why 2000 pixels is not a suggestion

Etsy enables zoom on listing photos at 2000 pixels or more on the shortest side. Below that, it does not.

For handmade goods, zoom is where the buying decision happens. It is how someone checks a glaze, a weave, a solder joint or a stitch before committing money to something they cannot hold. A listing that cannot be zoomed loses exactly the buyers who care most about quality, and it loses them silently.

There is a second effect. Upload below 2000 pixels and Etsy stretches the image to fit its layouts, which softens every edge. The photo that looked fine on your phone arrives on the listing page looking slightly out of focus.

Below 2000 pixels you lose zoom and gain blur at the same time. It is the one number on this page that is not a preference.

Square or landscape

Both work. They do different things.

Square at 2000 x 2000 is the safest choice. It displays consistently across every Etsy layout and it is what most sellers use, so your listings sit comfortably next to everything else in search.

Landscape at 2700 x 2025 is 4:3, and it fills more of the listing card in search results because the card itself is landscape. If your product is wider than it is tall, this is the better frame.

What matters more than the choice is being consistent. Ten listings in three different shapes make a shop look assembled rather than designed.

The banner size everyone disagrees about

Search for Etsy banner dimensions and you will find two numbers: 1600 x 400 and 3360 x 840. Both are correct, and the reason is worth understanding.

1600 x 400 is Etsy's own recommendation. The stated minimum is 1200 x 300. Anything at or above the recommendation displays properly.

3360 x 840 is the same 4:1 ratio at roughly double the resolution. On a high resolution laptop or phone screen, a 1600 pixel banner is being displayed across more physical pixels than it contains, so it looks slightly soft. Uploading at 3360 gives those screens enough detail to render sharply.

Neither is wrong. If you have the source file at a high resolution, use 3360 x 840. If you are working from something smaller, 1600 x 400 meets Etsy's requirement and will look fine on most screens.

Keep everything important in the middle

This applies to both sizes and it is the mistake that ruins more banners than dimensions do. Etsy crops banners from the sides as the screen gets narrower. Your shop name at the left edge disappears for a large share of visitors.

Design in the central sixty percent. Treat the outer edges as decoration that may not survive.

The mini banner has one catch

At 1600 x 213 it is a slim strip that puts more focus on your shop icon and listings. It also does not display on mobile at all, and roughly two thirds of Etsy traffic is mobile. If your branding lives in the mini banner, most visitors never see it.

Icons become circles

Shop icons at 500 x 500 and profile photos at 400 x 400 are both uploaded as squares and displayed as circles.

The corners are always cut. A logo that fills its square frame edge to edge loses its edges, and text near a corner disappears entirely. Leave generous space around whatever is in the middle.

The shop icon appears next to your shop name almost everywhere on Etsy, including search results and order confirmations, so it is doing more work than its size suggests.

What actually happens to your first photo

Your first listing photo is doing a different job from the other nine, and Etsy treats it differently.

In search results it displays small and cropped to landscape from the centre. Your carefully composed square becomes a wide slice through the middle of itself. Anything near the top or bottom of the frame is gone.

This has two practical consequences.

Centre your product with room on every side. Whatever Etsy crops, the product survives.

Test your photo at thumbnail size. Shrink your browser window until the listing card is small, or open your shop on a phone. If you cannot tell what the product is at that size, the photo is losing clicks before any of the other numbers on this page matter.

Why photos still look blurry at the right size

Two causes, and neither is fixed by resizing again.

The file was already compressed. Save a photo as a low quality JPEG, then upload it, and Etsy compresses it a second time. Compression damage stacks and it never comes back. Always upload from the original, not from a version that has been through WhatsApp or a previous export.

The image was upscaled. Enlarging a 1000 pixel photo to 2000 pixels makes the number correct while inventing every new pixel. It will pass Etsy's threshold and still look soft, because the detail was never there.

Compress once, at the end, from the original file. Around 2000 pixels wide saved as a JPEG at 85 percent is the setting that works for almost every listing, and it keeps files small enough to load quickly on mobile data.

A quick checklist

Before you upload anything:

  • Shortest side at least 2000 pixels, so zoom works
  • Product centred with room on every edge, because the thumbnail crops from the middle
  • Same shape and background across the shop
  • Banner content in the central sixty percent
  • Icon and profile artwork inside a circle, not filling the square
  • Exported once from the original, not from an already compressed copy

When the sizes are right and the photo still is not

Correct dimensions get your image displayed properly. They do not make it worth clicking. A perfectly sized 2000 pixel photo of a mug on a cluttered kitchen table is a perfectly sized photo of a cluttered kitchen table.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best image size for Etsy listings?

2000 x 2000 pixels square, or 2700 x 2025 for landscape. The number that matters is 2000 pixels on the shortest side, because that is the threshold where Etsy enables zoom. Below it you lose zoom and Etsy stretches the image, which softens it.

What size should an Etsy shop banner be?

Etsy recommends 1600 x 400 pixels with a minimum of 1200 x 300. Many guides say 3360 x 840, which is the same 4:1 ratio at double the resolution and looks sharper on high resolution screens. Both are valid. Keep important content in the central sixty percent, because Etsy crops banners from the sides on narrower screens.

Why do my Etsy photos look blurry?

Usually because the file was below 2000 pixels and Etsy stretched it, or because it had already been compressed once before uploading and Etsy compressed it again. Compression damage stacks and does not come back. Always upload from the original file rather than an exported or shared copy.

Does Etsy crop my listing photos?

In search results, yes. Thumbnails display cropped to landscape from the centre of your first photo, so a square image loses its top and bottom. Keep your product centred with room on every side so nothing important sits where the crop lands.

What size is the Etsy shop icon?

500 x 500 pixels, uploaded square and displayed as a circle. The corners are always cut, so keep your logo or artwork away from them. The profile photo works the same way at 400 x 400.
