Etsy Fees Explained: What You Actually Keep Per Sale

Four separate fees stack on every Etsy order, and two of them apply to your shipping charge as well. Here is what each one costs, with the arithmetic on a real order.

Etsy does not take one flat cut. Four separate fees land on every order, two of them apply to your shipping charge as well as your item price, and one of them can more than double the total without warning. Here is exactly what each one costs, worked through on a real order.

The short answer: for a US seller with no Offsite Ads involved, Etsy takes roughly 10 to 12 percent of what the buyer pays. That number moves depending on your price, and it is not the number most sellers have in their head.

The four fees, and when each one lands

Each fee is charged at a different moment, which is part of why they are hard to hold in your head at once.

FeeAmountCharged when
Listing fee$0.20You publish, and again every renewal

Listing fee

Twenty cents to publish a listing. It renews automatically every four months, and again each time an item sells — so a listing with stock of ten will cost you $0.20 eleven times over its life if it sells out. It is the smallest fee and the one sellers underestimate most, because it is charged whether or not anything sells.

Transaction fee

6.5% of the total order, and this is Etsy's main revenue. It applies to the item price plus the shipping you charge plus gift wrapping. If you run a sale, it is calculated on the discounted price rather than the original, which is one of the few places the fee structure works in your favour.

Payment processing

3% + $0.25 for US sellers, taken by Etsy Payments to move the buyer's money to you. The percentage part applies to the same total as the transaction fee. The flat 25 cents is where things get uncomfortable on cheap items, which we will come back to.

Offsite Ads

12 to 15% of the order, but only when a buyer reaches your listing through an ad Etsy placed on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest or Bing. Most orders do not trigger it. The ones that do cost roughly double.

A real order, worked through

Take a $30 ceramic mug with $6 shipping. The buyer pays $36. Here is where that goes for a US seller, with no Offsite Ads involved.

LineAmount
Buyer pays$36.00
Listing fee−$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5% of $36)−$2.34
Payment processing (3% of $36 + $0.25)−$1.33
Total Etsy fees$3.87
You receive$32.13

That is 10.8% of what the buyer paid, or 12.9% of your item price — before materials, before postage, before your time.

This is the number to carry around: on a typical order, assume Etsy keeps about a ninth of it. Anything you calculate on the full sale price is overstating what reaches you.

The fee almost everyone forgets

Both percentage fees apply to the shipping you charge, not just the item price. In the example above, $6 of shipping cost $0.57 in fees before a single label was bought.

This matters more than it sounds, because it interacts with a habit many sellers have: charging less for shipping than it actually costs, to make the listing look cheaper.

  • You charge $5 shipping. Etsy takes roughly $0.48 of it.
  • Postage and packaging cost you $7.
  • You are down $2.48 on shipping alone, on every single order.

Multiply that across a hundred orders and it is $248 that never appears in any report, because Etsy shows the shipping you charged as revenue and never mentions what you paid.

Whatever you charge for shipping, Etsy takes about 9.5% of it. Free shipping does not avoid this — it just moves the postage into your item price, where the same 9.5% applies.

Why cheap items lose more

Two of the four fees are flat: the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 payment fixed fee. They cost the same on a $10 order as on a $200 one, which means the effective percentage falls as your price rises.

Same $6 shipping throughout, no Offsite Ads:

Item priceEtsy fees% of order
$10$1.9712.3%
$20$2.9211.2%
$30$3.8710.8%
$50$5.7710.3%
$100$10.529.9%

A $10 item gives up 12.3% of the order; a $100 item gives up 9.9%. That gap is small in percentage terms and enormous in practice, because the cheap item also has less margin to begin with. It is the arithmetic behind advice you have probably heard without the reasoning attached — that very low-priced listings rarely work on Etsy.

Offsite Ads: the fee that changes everything

Etsy advertises listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Bing. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and orders from your shop within thirty days, Etsy charges you a share of that order.

  • 15% if your shop made under $10,000 in the last 365 days — and you can opt out
  • 12% at or above $10,000 — mandatory, no opt-out

Run the same $36 order with a 15% Offsite Ads fee attached:

Etsy fees$3.87$9.27
Share of order10.8%25.8%
You receive$32.13$26.73

A quarter of the order. The thirty-day attribution window is the part that stings — a buyer can click an ad, ignore it, and order from you three weeks later, and the fee still applies.

If your shop is under $10,000 a year, opting out lives in Shop Manager under Marketing then Offsite Ads. Whether you should is a separate question — the ads do bring traffic you would not otherwise get.

If you sell outside the US

The $0.20 listing fee and the 6.5% transaction fee are the same everywhere. What changes is payment processing, and the difference is bigger than most guides admit.

United States3% + $0.25
United Kingdom4% + £0.20
Most of the EU4% + €0.30
AustraliaAround 3% + A$0.25

A UK seller pays roughly a percentage point more than a US seller on the same order. Several countries also carry a Regulatory Operating Fee on top — currently applied in markets including the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey and India, at rates that vary and change periodically.

Rates by country move more often than the headline fees do. Check your Etsy Payment account for your own numbers rather than trusting any figure in a blog post, including this one.

What to actually do about it

You cannot negotiate any of these. What you can do is stop pricing as though they do not exist.

Price backwards from your margin

Most pricing advice says multiply your material cost by three. That ignores fees entirely, which is why a 3× markup that looks like a 66% margin often lands closer to 40%. Work out the price that leaves the margin you actually want, after everything.

Charge what shipping costs you

The gap between what you charge and what you pay comes out of every order, invisibly. Either charge the real cost or build it into the item price — but know which one you are doing.

Check your break-even before you scale

If each sale leaves you $2 after fees and materials, more sales will not fix that. It is worth knowing the number before you spend on ads or add product lines.

Treat cheap listings carefully

Under about $15, the flat fees start taking a serious share. Bundling two items into one order is often more profitable than selling them separately, because the flat fees are charged once instead of twice.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Etsy take per sale?

For a US seller with no Offsite Ads involved, roughly 10 to 12 percent of what the buyer pays. On a $36 order that is about $3.87. If the sale came through Offsite Ads, add another 12 to 15 percent of the order total on top, which pushes the total closer to 25 percent.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping you charge the buyer as well as the item price, and so does payment processing. If you charge $8 for shipping, Etsy takes roughly $0.76 of that before you have paid for a single label.

Why are Etsy fees higher on cheap items?

Because two of the fees are flat. The $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 payment fixed fee cost the same on a $10 item as on a $100 one. On a $16 order they eat 2.8 percent by themselves; on a $106 order, 0.4 percent. That is why very low-priced listings rarely work on Etsy.

Does Etsy charge the transaction fee on discounted prices?

On the discounted price, not the original. A $30 item sold at 20% off is charged 6.5% of $24, not of $30. That is genuinely helpful when you run sales — though your own costs do not shrink with the discount, which is where the margin damage actually comes from.

Can I avoid Etsy fees?

The listing, transaction and payment fees are unavoidable. Offsite Ads is the one you can opt out of, but only if your shop has made under $10,000 in the last 365 days. Above that threshold participation is mandatory at 12 percent.
